KFZ-Kühlmittel sind eine Mischung aus Wasser und Frostschutzkonzentrat. Das ideale Mischungsverhältnis beträgt 1:1, was einem Frostschutz von -36°C entspricht.
Der maximal mögliche Frostschutz von ca. -52° C stellt sich bei einer Mischung von 2:1 (Konzentrat:Wasser) ein. Pures Frostschutzmittel reduziert die Leistungsfähigkeit der Kühlung im Vergleich zum 1:1-Gemisch um rund 50%.
Frostschutz-Konzentrate tragen aber auch zur Erhöhung des Siedepunktes bei, was im Sommer vor Überhitzung des Motors schützt. Bei einer Mischung von Wasser und Frostschutz im Verhältnis 1:1 liegt der Siedepunkt des Kühlmittels bei etwa 107°.
